Karpathos

Karpathos is one of the Dodecanese islands and indeed the second larger. The island became part of Greece on 7 March 1948, together with all the other Dodecanese islands. According to mythology, Karpathos was the island of the Titans. When you visit Karpathos, you realize how different it is from all the other Greek islands. There is a special quality that makes it unique, (although it is not very popular tourist destination) with many things to offer. Wild beauty, impressive architecture and a lively tradition are words that can characterize Karpathos.

Karpathos has an astonishing alteration of landscapes. The island is most famous for its majestic beaches with crystal turquoise waters and golden sand, like Achata, Agios Nikolaos Spoa, Apella, Kyra Panagia etc. The majority of them are very well hidden from the road and you will probably need to drive a few kilometers on roads with several turns in order to access them. They can be accessed by boat as well, but it is certainly worthwhile driving. You will definitely be compensated by the amazing landscape when you arrive.

Karpathos beachKarpathos’ villages on the other hand, and especially Olympos, are a must see. Colored houses, old windmills, spectacular view of the archipelagos, ladies dressed traditionally and homemade Karpathian food are some things that will give you unforgettable moments. In fact Olympos is one of the most renowned villages in Greece.

Besides beaches and villages, the island is blessed with numerous natural trails which make it a wonderful place for trekkers. Here, in Karpathos lays the highest point of the Dodecanese, Mt Lastos at 1.215 meters.

If you are the adventurous type, you certainly have to visit the northern part of the island, which doesn’t have as many tourists as the southern, but is perfect for people who seek something more authentic and want to be closer to nature.
