The Greek hero of Ethiopia

George GanotakisGeorge Ganotakis or George Photis was settled in Ethiopia at 1850 from the island of Rhodes. He joined the Imperial army of Emperor Gotzam and he earned the title of Balabaras for his bravery.

Balabaras was the the title of the commander of the Imperial Guards of Ethiopia.

From this day he was known as Georgas Balabaras and he followed the Ethiopian army against the Mahdi of Sudan and against Italians in the battle of Adwa at 1896. He was known for his extraordinary Swordsmanship with sword and shield. According to testimonies he was the only European who fought against the Italians.
